Italy defeated Liechtenstein 4-0 thanks to four first half goals in a Group G 2018 World Cup Qualifier on Saturday night.
West Ham United striker, Simone Zaza received a call-up for Italy’s World Cup Qualifier and upcoming friendly. After the match, Zaza spoke to Rai Sport.
Zaza has not been in great form for West Ham, and was not shy to admit his Azzurri call-up was unexpected.
“I wasn’t expecting this call-up, it’s needless to be a hypocrite; I needed it and I’m happy. It means that the coach believes in me and yes, it’s unexpected. I come from a non-positive period, therefore I try to give my best and prove my worth. I hope that this period passes as soon as possible. Lately, the goal has been haunted, but it happens to everyone; I will not beat myself down and that’s how soccer is. In some moments nothing goes in, and in others it’s the opposite. I’m glad to have returned to a group where I feel like myself and I’m very happy. It’s a great group.”
The media has linked the Italian forward to a move away from West Ham. A constant transfer rumor is that of Zaza to Serie A club, Napoli. However, Zaza says he is focused on playing well with West Ham.
“Honestly, I don’t know about the interest of any team. Napoli is a great team. I had the honor to play with Juve and I’m proud of this, but I think about unblocking myself and to play well. West Ham is my current club and it would be a failure if I left them.”
